| The Lennox Academy of Self
Defense at ART 634 is a school designed to teach elements of unarmed and armed
self-defense. The school is dedicated to teaching those students who wish to
build self control and the skills necessary to feel confident of their
ability to protect themselves and others should the need arise. As in any
martial art, the purpose of the training is so that we never need to use our
skills- the level of self-confidence we obtain throughout the learning
process typically keeps would-be offenders at bay. However, the curriculum
is fashioned in a manner to teach the student how to conduct themselves in a
real-life situation.
The classes are structured such that a student may
choose between unarmed and armed styles of combat. The curriculum has within
it the elements of centuries old processes for the training of personal
combat. Many early academies began with unarmed combat, then moved into
dagger work and from there into the sword. Lennox Academy of Self Defense
offers and highly encourages the student to follow this structure, but does
allow one to begin with weapons if they so choose.
The format of the academy classes is not based upon a
set number of weeks for each style. Each class will be taught until the
curriculum for it has been achieved. It is difficult to set a specific
number of weeks for any class, as they move only as fast as the students
themselves are comfortable advancing. Each student will learn in a different
manner and pace. The classes are designed to tailor the teaching to each
person individually. Once the end of the curriculum has been reached for a
specific style, students may continue in an advanced level class or move to
a new style if they wish.
